Huawei P20 Pro – product test

Deutsche Version

In the middle of all our South Africa experiences – and there is still a lot to come 😉 – I need to announce one or two other articles.

As a producttest I received a Huawei P20 Pro by  The Insiders.

For now, I just want to share my first impressions. If there are questions or you need to know specific things about the phone, just leave a comment and follow the blog. In the next days or weeks I will get back to you with an in-depth article.

At the moment, I therefore like to concentrate on the less prominent features and give you some details about what is impressing but maybe still unknown about the Huawei P20 Pro. So far I never considered Huawei as I missed a clear separation of private and business related stuff. However, I was very surprised to see that there actually is a feature called PrivateSpace which lets you separate these two worlds – in fact, this does work better and more comfortable than I was used to by other manufacturers. Using this feature, business details can reside without any problems in the PrivateSpace. I really did not know anything about this in advance and cannot remember having seen this feature advertised.

Another remarkable point is the fingerprint sensor. I have not seen one which is that fast. Especially when I am out or doing sports I often had the problem that with sweaty hands it was near impossible to unlock the phone. With the P20 Pro no problem at all, really awesome!

For sure, as photographer I instantly had a look at the camera and do like it. The 40 megapixel seem to be really there and are not just marketing but instead deliver many details in reality. I am going to test the tele and night photo functions in the next days. The AI does indeed recognize your subjects. If you then finally like the applied style is obviously up to you. Indeed, the cake in the photo was correctly detected as ”food” and the result could make up a good food post on Instagram.

I took the next image during sunrise in backlight and afterwards did some editing in Snapseed. I intentionally used similar processing steps as usual and was surprised how much information you can get from the photo. No doubt, for a smartphone there is a lot of possibilities here.

And in the end, if you are travelling a lot or spend a lot of time outdoors – you gonna love the battery! Whereas the battery of my previous Samsung Galaxy S6 usually dies around early afternoon, the P20 Pro does last up to midnight with similar usage. That’s about one and a half to two times the time for me. Definitely, nothing to criticize here.
